New medicine for cervical pre-cancer coming soon! ICMR took a big decision

Cervical Precancer Drug: Every year in India, about 80 thousand women are affected by cervical cancer, which is about one third of the total cases worldwide. Till now, surgery has been the most reliable method for the treatment of its pre-cancer stage, but now the Indian Council of Medical Research i.e. ICMR has taken a decision, which can change this entire picture in the future.

After all, what is this big decision, which increased expectations?

According to the statement issued by PIB Delhi on July 21, 2026, ICMR has licensed three indigenous biomedical technologies to major Indian pharma and vaccine companies under its Medical Innovation Patent Mitra initiative. One of these is SHetA2, a new anti-HPV drug, which has been assigned to Pune-based Emcure Pharmaceuticals for further development. This medicine is specifically designed for the treatment of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia or CIN, a pre-cancerous condition which, if not caught early, can develop into cervical cancer.

This medicine is the result of joint hard work of scientists of two countries

SHetA2 has been jointly developed by Dr. Shaukat Hussain of ICMR’s National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research and Dr. Doris M. Benbrook of Stephenson Cancer Center, University of Oklahoma, USA. Its biggest feature is its targeted approach, it specifically kills pre-cancerous and cancerous cells affected by HPV, while protecting the surrounding healthy cells. If this drug proves successful in further clinical trials, it may become one of the first targeted drugs that will be able to treat pre-cancerous conditions without surgery.

ICMR chief told why this is an important step for India

Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, Dr. Rajeev Bahl said on this occasion that ICMR has a commitment that the research done with government funding should be transformed into effective products for common patients. He said that through initiatives like Medical Innovation Patent Mitra, the partnership between researchers and industry is being strengthened, so that the path of translating scientific discoveries into commercial products can be made easier.

Clinical proof is yet to come, but expectations are high

However, getting licensing does not mean that this medicine will immediately start being used in the treatment of patients. Before coming into the market, it will have to go through several stages of clinical trials, so that its safety and effectiveness can be scientifically proven. Nevertheless, if SHetA2 is successful, it will not only become a major weapon in the fight against cervical cancer, but will also give new strength to indigenous drug research in India.
