Is the risk of cancer increasing in the elderly? know the truth

Elderly Cancer Detection Warning Signs: The risk of cancer also increases rapidly with increasing age. Data from America and Britain show that cancer is not only becoming a major health problem among the elderly, but in many cases the disease is also being identified very late. The situation is such that a large number of elderly patients get diagnosed with cancer only when their condition worsens and they have to be taken to the hospital in an emergency. Due to late detection of the disease, treatment may become difficult and the patient’s chances of survival also reduce.

In a study published online on July 14 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, emergency presentation, i.e. emergency detection of cancer in elderly cancer patients, and the associated mortality rate were studied. Caroline A. of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Thompson and his colleagues analyzed data from the US National Medicare Group. It included 9,29,378 patients suffering from 16 major types of cancer between 2008 and 2017.

The study revealed that in about 28 percent of the cases, cancer was detected during emergency presentation. Of these, 22 percent patients were inpatient and 6 percent were outpatient emergency presentations. However, a big difference was seen according to the type of cancer. The rate of emergency presentation in breast and prostate cancer was less than 10 percent. Whereas in liver, lung, stomach, colon, ovarian and pancreatic cancer this figure was more than 40 percent.

Cancer detection in emergency increases the risk of death

Research also revealed a big difference in the survival rate of patients. Among patients whose cancer was not detected in an emergency situation, the one-year survival rate was 81 percent. It was 60 percent in patients with outpatient emergency presentation and only 36 percent in patients with inpatient emergency presentation.

The adjusted risk of death within 30 days in patients with an inpatient emergency presentation was nearly four times that of patients diagnosed with cancer as usual. According to the research, this difference remained even after taking into account factors like the patient’s age, stage of cancer, other diseases and physical weakness. According to researcher Caroline Thompson, how and under what circumstances cancer is detected also provides important information about the patient’s future condition.

More than half of the cases in people above 70 years of age

A report by Cancer Research UK in Britain also points towards a serious situation regarding cancer in the elderly. According to the report, the risk of cancer increases rapidly with age. More than half of the cancer cases in Britain occur in people above 70 years of age, while this age group accounts for only 14 percent of the total population. 9 out of 10 cancer cases are found in people 50 years of age or older.

Despite this, cancer in the elderly is often detected only after the disease has progressed significantly. Nearly one in three cancer cases among people over 80 years of age was detected after emergency admission. In comparison, this figure among people below 50 years of age is 15 percent.

Elderly patients are getting less treatment

The report also revealed differences in treatment based on age. Elderly patients were found to be less likely to receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. According to international data, only 2.4 percent of cancer patients aged 85 years or older in Britain were given chemotherapy. This figure was 8.1 percent in Australia and 14 percent in Ontario, Canada.

In Britain, 6.2 to 9.6 percent of cancer patients in this age group received radiotherapy, while in some parts of Canada this rate was more than 20 percent and in some areas of Australia it was more than 16 percent. However, due to other diseases, some elderly patients may not be physically fit for difficult treatment. Concern was expressed in the report that many times the treatment decision is taken only on the basis of the patient’s age rather than his actual fitness.
