V Senthil Balaji Custody: A Chennai court on Friday (June 15) sent arrested Tamil Nadu minister V. Senthil Balaji to the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody for eight days. The ED has summoned Balaji’s brother RV Ashok Kumar and others for questioning next week in the money laundering case.
Meanwhile, the tussle between Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and the state’s Stalin government has increased. On Friday (June 16) on the recommendation of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Governor RN Ravi allotted the portfolios handled by V Senthil Balaji to other ministers of the state government, but did not agree to Balaji’s continuation in the cabinet. On this, Stalin’s party DMK said that it is not in his authority.
What did DMK say?
Speaking to news agency ANI, DMK leader TKS Elangovan said, “Has the Constitution empowered the Governor to decide who will continue as a minister or not?” The constitution does not give such authority to the governor. V Senthil Balaji is just an accused. In such a situation, the allegations may also be wrong.
Who was given the ministry of V Senthil?
A Raj Bhavan press release said that Balaji is now a minister without a ministry, while Governor Ravi has opposed his continuance in Stalin’s cabinet as he is facing criminal proceedings. It said that Ravi has not agreed to continue as a member of TV Senthil Balaji’s Council of Ministers as he is currently in judicial custody.
According to the release, on the recommendation of Stalin, the power, non-conventional energy department, hitherto handled by Balaji, has been allotted to Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu.
The Prohibition and Excise Department, operated under Balaji, will now be handled by Housing and Urban Development Minister S. Muthuswamy. Thennarasu and Muthuswamy will take charge of the new portfolios along with their existing portfolios.

The ED arrested Senthil Balaji on Wednesday under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED then claimed in the court that he misused his position for alleged job scams and kickbacks in state transport undertakings in 2014-15.
