Manipur Crisis: In Manipur, the ban on internet services has been extended till 3 pm on 10th July. The Manipur government on Wednesday said it has extended the suspension of internet services in the state by five days to prevent any disturbance to peace and public order.
A statement issued by Home Commissioner T. Ranjit Singh said, “There is apprehension that some anti-social elements may use social media extensively to circulate pictures, hate speeches and video messages inciting public sentiments.” There are, which can have a serious impact on the law and order situation.
120 people died in violence
Nearly 120 people have lost their lives and over 3,000 have been injured in clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. Violence first broke out on May 3 when a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in the hill districts of the state to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
The population of Manipur consists of about 53 percent of the Meitei community and they mostly live in the Imphal Valley. The tribal Nagas and Kukis constitute 40 per cent of the population and live in the hilly districts.
Congress will seek a clear answer from the government on Manipur in Parliament
The Congress on Wednesday said it would demand a clear answer and accountability from the government on the Manipur violence issue in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. The main opposition party also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should visit Manipur and call an all-party meeting under his leadership.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “The PM took time out to congratulate the Indian football team on a spectacular win that made us all proud but he continues to remain silent on the issue of Manipur. They are part of the team and the silence of the Prime Minister hurts all of them.”
