China Rocket Exploded in Space: The Chinese Long March 6A rocket successfully launched its first 18 satellites for the Qianfan (Thousand Cells) broadband network. This launch was aimed at hosting 14,000 spacecraft. However, while China was still celebrating its success, the upper part of the rocket broke into 300 pieces 800 kilometers above the ground.
Giving this information, the US Space Command said, USSPACECOM can confirm the breakup of the Chinese Long March 6A rocket launched on August 6, 2024, resulting in more than 300 pieces of trackable debris in low Earth orbit. USSPACECOM has not seen any immediate threat and continues to conduct regular conjunction assessments to support the safety and stability of the space domain.

The company had earlier warned
On Tuesday, August 6, a Long March 6A rocket that took off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center put the first 18 satellites of the Qianfan Project into low Earth orbit, marking the start of an ambitious 14,000-satellite broadband network to rival Starlink. However, shortly after launch, the rocket’s upper stage, which carried the payload into orbit, broke apart, leaving behind “more than 300 pieces of trackable debris in low Earth orbit.”
According to the South China Morning Post, the rocket malfunction comes after the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, a subsidiary of China’s state-owned contractor China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), said last month that it had “optimized the upper stage inertially process to improve the safety of the upper stage in orbit.”
