Israel–Hamas War: There has been a war going on between Israel and Hamas since last year, due to which thousands of people have died in Gaza. The fading light of peace amidst the war seems ready to shine once again. The reason for this is that Israel has accepted the proposal presented for ceasefire in Gaza. However, now the ball is in the court of Hamas, which has to decide whether it wants peace or wants to continue the ongoing war in Gaza.
According to news agency Reuters, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the ‘bridging proposal’ presented by Washington. This proposal contains a plan to deal with the disagreements that prevent a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Blinken has also requested Hamas, which rules Gaza, to do the same. By accepting the bridging proposal, the way for a ceasefire in Gaza is now being prepared.
Bridging proposal is last chance for peace: Antony Blinken
After meeting with Israeli officials and Netanyahu, Blinken met reporters and put forward his views on peace in Gaza. He had earlier said that this proposal could prove to be the last chance for a peace agreement. Talks in Qatar stopped last week without any result over the demand for a ceasefire and hostage return agreement. Talks are expected to resume this week based on the US proposal to bridge the gap between Israel and Hamas.
Netanyahu supports bridging proposal: Antony Blinken
Speaking to media persons in Tel Aviv on Monday (August 19), the US Secretary of State said, “I had a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu today. He confirmed to me that Israel is accepting the bridging proposal and he supports it.”
Blinken further said, “Now it is up to Hamas to do the same. Then with the help of mediators (USA, Egypt and Qatar), all the parties will have to come together. They will have to clarify how they will implement these commitments which they have made under this agreement.”
