Sheikh Hasina: After the coup in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled to India, but now it is very difficult for her to go anywhere else from here. Now she has only two options. Either she goes back to Bangladesh where the government is ready to file a case against her or she stays in India, for which the government here will probably never be ready. So what is the option left for Sheikh Hasina now? Why is she not taking refuge in any other country? Why is it difficult for her to return to Bangladesh for life?
When Sheikh Hasina hurriedly fled to India, India also hoped that after staying here for a few days, Sheikh Hasina would find a place for herself. But this has not happened yet, because no other country is ready to give her shelter. Now perhaps no country in the world will give her shelter, because Sheikh Hasina no longer has a passport with which she can travel to any other country in the world.
Bangladesh’s interim government canceled Sheikh Hasina’s passport
The interim government formed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus has cancelled Sheikh Hasina’s diplomatic passport. This means that now Sheikh Hasina cannot travel to any other country, so the only option left for her is to stay where she is. That is, to stay in India. However, Sheikh Hasina also has the option of returning to Bangladesh. But even if Sheikh Hasina goes to Bangladesh, she will be arrested immediately.
Know the reason behind cancellation of passport?
The new interim government has registered more than 30 cases of murder, genocide and kidnapping against Sheikh Hasina, who has been the PM of the country thrice. These include 26 cases of murder, 4 of genocide and one of kidnapping. Apart from Sheikh Hasina, similar serious cases are registered against her son, daughter and sister. In such a situation, preparations are underway to register some more cases against her entire family. If Sheikh Hasina or anyone from her family even sets foot in Bangladesh, their arrest is certain.
So Sheikh Hasina is in India. Till the time the conditions in Bangladesh become favourable for Sheikh Hasina. But that will take time. Till then will Sheikh Hasina stay in India? She can stay. But the biggest question is that if the Bangladesh government demands the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from the Indian government, then what will India do. After all, there is an extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh. This treaty has been in place since 2013.
Know what is extradition treaty?
In fact, the extradition treaty says that if a criminal of one country is in another country, then that country has to return that criminal to the government of his original country. India has also got many of its criminals extradited and they have been brought back from different countries of the world.
Like Abu Salem was brought back to India from Portugal. Chhota Rajan was brought back by the Indian government from Indonesia. Malkit Kaur and Surjit Badesha were brought back to India from Canada. Many other big criminals were brought back to India from abroad and were punished here according to Indian law. Leave aside other countries, the Indian government also extradited its criminal Anup Chetia from Bangladesh because he was a big terrorist of ULFA who was taking refuge in Bangladesh.
Murder-kidnapping case registered against Sheikh Hasina
If Bangladesh demands the extradition of Sheikh Hasina as a criminal, then what option will India have? As long as there was no criminal case against Sheikh Hasina, her asylum in India was political asylum. And in that case, India was not forced to hand over Sheikh Hasina to the Bangladesh government. But now Sheikh Hasina is a criminal for Bangladesh. And the crimes are not minor either, there are serious allegations of murder, genocide and kidnapping against her.
Regarding this, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the party of Khalida Zia, the head of the political party of Bangladesh and a staunch opponent of Sheikh Hasina, has demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. Although this demand is political, India has no problem with it right now. But if the same demand comes from the Bangladesh government, then India will have to think.
Because the matter will not be about a single person but about international relations and especially relations with Bangladesh, one of our best neighbours, with whom peace is extremely important for India. But keeping Sheikh Hasina in India forever can create a mountain of problems for the government. The rest of this matter has to be looked into by the central government and its foreign ministry.
