The festival of Janmashtami is usually celebrated on two days on different dates. Whenever this happens, in such a situation, the people of Smarta sect celebrate Janmashtami on the first day and the people of Vaishnava sect celebrate Janmashtami on the second date.

To celebrate Janmashtami, the Vaishnav sect prefers Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra. Whereas the Smart sect prefers the time of Nishita Kaal.
