Unicorn Antenna: A major agreement has been reached between India and Japan regarding the purchase of major defense equipment. The third ministerial 2 + 2 meeting was held on 20 August in New Delhi regarding this issue. Under this agreement, India will buy a communication system from Japan for its navy. This antenna made in Japan is called Unicorn, whose full name is ‘Unified Complex Radio Antenna’. In a joint statement issued by both the countries, it has been said that the four ministers have made good progress towards the transfer and signing of the agreement regarding Unicorn and related equipment.
Unicorn has been developed jointly by three Japanese companies NEC Corporation, Sampa Kogyo K.K. and Yokohama Rubber Company Limited. The main contractor in this has been NEC Corporation. Unicorn ‘Nora-50 Variant’ is currently deployed on Mogami-class frigates. Information related to Unicorn has been shared on the website of Yokohama Rubber, in which it is told that to make Unicorn stealth, several aerial antennas already installed on the deck have been fitted in a support column. Due to excellent stealth and deployment of Unicorn at a good location, the radio waves emitted from it can travel longer. At the same time, its maintenance and method of deployment is also simple.
What are the features of Japanese Unicorn?
Unicorn has many features that make it special. This antenna has a network called Link 16, which is a tactical data network link used by NATO and Western countries. It also has a tactical air navigation system, which detects the direction of the ship and the distance of helicopters flying from the ship and provides accurate information. Along with this, it has an IFF antenna, which identifies its friend and foe. Unicorn also has ESM or ES-R system, which detects ships coming towards it. It also has UHF/VHF transmitting/receiving antenna system, providing wireless communication, it is used for short distance communication. Unicorn also includes ORQ-2B-4 offshore wireless router. This is a type of Wi-Fi band, which works to give information when identified by sonar.
