Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The discussions going on between junior doctors and the West Bengal government on Wednesday (September 18) on the demand for justice in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata yielded a positive result. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government on Thursday (September 19) issued instructions to ensure the safety and efficient functioning of all health professionals.

The West Bengal government on Thursday (September 19) issued a list of directives on the safety, security and efficient functioning of healthcare professionals, saying these orders need to be implemented immediately. These instructions come a day after the government held a meeting with protesting junior doctors on the same issue.

Know what instructions did the West Bengal government issue?

The two-page directive issued by West Bengal government’s chief secretary Manoj Pant to principal secretary (health) NS Nigam mentions the need for “adequate availability of on-duty rooms, washrooms, CCTV, drinking water facilities in health facilities”. Apart from this, one of the 10 directives issued states that the work in this regard should be completed as soon as possible.

The directive came hours after the junior doctors submitted a draft of the key points of their meeting with the West Bengal government on Wednesday (September 18) night to Pant, where they were waiting for the state government’s response. The directive also said that the state has appointed former DGP Surjit Kar Purkayastha to conduct a security audit of all medical colleges and hospitals. According to the directive, all orders should be implemented immediately.

Know what happened in the meeting held on Wednesday night?

The doctors raised issues related to transparency in the referral system, allocation of beds to patients, recruitment of health workers and ending the ‘culture of intimidation’ prevalent in the campuses. The doctors said that their demands are linked to the concern that the heinous crime that happened in RG Kar Hospital should never happen again.

Protesting doctors not happy with the outcome of the meeting with Bengal government

The protesting doctors said that the government agreed that most of our demands were legitimate and should be implemented immediately. But at the end of the talks, we were disappointed when the Chief Secretary refused to give us the details of the signed proceedings of the meeting.
