New Zealand’s youngest MP performed Maori Haka dance in Parliament, also tore the copy of the bill

New Zealand Parliament Latest News: An interesting scene was seen in the Parliament of New Zealand on Thursday (14 November 2024). In fact, the youngest Maori MP Hana-Rawhiti Kariariki Mapi-Clark, who is in the news due to her speeches, started dancing enthusiastically in the House in protest of the Indigenous Treaty Bill. Not only this, while doing so he also tore a copy of the Swadeshi Treaty Bill. Within no time some other MPs also joined him in such protest.

A video of this protest that took place during the Parliament session in New Zealand is now going viral on social media. In fact, on Thursday, all the MPs in the House of Parliament of New Zealand were gathered to vote on the Treaty Principles Bill, but the 22-year-old Te-Pati Maori MP started speaking during the session. As she spoke, she tore up a copy of the bill and began performing the Haka, a traditional Maori dance.

Within moments, other members of the House and spectators sitting in the gallery also joined in the haka dance with Hana-Rawahiti Kariariki Mappy-Clark, due to which Speaker Gerry Brownlee briefly adjourned the House session.

Why is this bill being opposed?

The controversial Treaty Principles bill has received little support and is unlikely to become law. Critics say it threatens racial discord and constitutional turmoil, while thousands of New Zealanders have been traveling across the country to protest against it this week. It is reported that under the principles set out in the Treaty of Waitangi of 1840, which guide relations between the government and Māori, the tribes were given broad rights to retain their lands and protect their interests in exchange for ceding rule to the British. The promise was made. The bill would specify that those rights should apply to all New Zealanders.

Who is Hana-Rawahiti Kariariki Mappy-Clark?

Hana-Rawahiti Kariariki Mapei-Clark is a 22-year-old New Zealand MP, representing Te Pati Māori in Parliament. She is the youngest MP in the House. Mapey-Clark initially made headlines when she was elected in the 2023 elections in New Zealand and performed the traditional haka in Parliament during her maiden speech. Both she and her father were considered candidates to contest the Te Pāti Māori seat, but Mapye-Clark was ultimately chosen because of her youthful outlook. Mappy-Clark has been a vocal critic of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and his conservative government, which has been accused of dismantling Māori rights.
