How Does Obesity Affect Kidney Function?: Kidney disease is now affecting about 10 percent of the world’s population. Generally people associate it only with diabetes and high blood pressure, whereas the reality is much bigger than this. What are the reasons?

Kidney disease often progresses slowly without any obvious symptoms. There is no pain or sharp symptoms, but internally the filtering ability of the kidneys reduces. Dr Mohammad S Khan told TOI that chronic kidney disease is not limited to the Big Two, i.e. diabetes and blood pressure. Now lifestyle, environment and genetic reasons are also playing a big role. Obesity not only increases the risk of diabetes, but also directly puts pressure on the kidneys. As body weight increases, the kidneys have to work harder, which can lead to scarring of the tissue over time. Nowadays, kidney stress related to obesity is being seen even in young people. It is very important to maintain regular exercise, balanced diet and weight control.

Smoking is a big factor

Smoking is also a silent threat to the kidneys. Nicotine and toxic elements present in cigarettes harm the blood vessels of the kidneys. In people who already have kidney problems, smoking further accelerates the disease. Another matter of concern is chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology. This disease is being seen even without diabetes or high blood pressure, especially in farmers and laborers working in rural areas. Frequent dehydration, work in heat, contact with chemicals and presence of heavy metals in water are considered to be the possible reasons for this. Regular checking in such areas is very important.

What things should be kept in mind?

Taking painkillers, especially NSAIDs, for a long time without consulting a doctor can cause permanent kidney damage. Similarly, heavy metals or unsafe amounts of elements have been found in some products sold in the name of natural or traditional medicines. Supplements taken for bodybuilding or weight loss can also increase the risk, especially if the kidneys are already weak. Apart from this, frequent urine infections, kidney stones, family history and autoimmune diseases also increase the risk of CKD. Experts say that getting regular blood and urine tests done, timely detection is the most effective way to protect the kidneys from serious damage.
