Diabetes drug metformin also affects the brain, big revelation in new study

Metformin Study Brain Effect: A new study has revealed a lot about metformin, a drug that has been used for years in the treatment of diabetes. In fact, till now it was believed that this claim controls blood sugar mainly by affecting the liver or intestines. But new research has revealed that it also affects the brain. This research is considered to be an important change in understanding the methods of treatment of diabetes and can also open the way for new types of targeted medicines in the future.

What came out in the study?

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, America, found in their study that metformin helps in controlling blood sugar through a specific part of the brain. This research has been published in the journal Science Advance. According to this study, the ventromedial hypothalamus, a part of the brain, plays an important role in controlling the glucose balance in the body and metformin affects it.

How does metformin work?

According to researchers, a protein named Rap1 plays a very important role in this process. When the activity of this protein was reduced, metformin was able to effectively reduce blood sugar. Apart from this, neurons named SF1 were also found active in this process, which help in enhancing the effect of the drug. In this study, experiments have been conducted on genetically modified mice, which did not have Rap1 protein. Metformin did not show any effect in them and there was no improvement in blood sugar level. Whereas when metformin was given directly into the brain, blood sugar was seen to decrease rapidly in very small amounts.

What became clear from the research?

Regarding this research, researchers believe that they also investigated which cells in the ventromedial hypothalamus were involved in mediating the effects of metformin. While researchers analyzed brain tissue samples and measured the electrical activity of SF1 neurons, metformin increased the activity in most of them. But only when Rap1 was present. According to the researchers, this research changed their thinking about metformin. It doesn’t just work in the liver or end, it also works in the brain. They found that the drug required a higher concentration for the liver and intestines to respond, but the brain reacted at much lower levels.
