Big blow to Humayun Kabir, Owaisi breaks alliance, AIMIM will contest elections alone in Bengal

Amidst the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has announced to break the alliance with Humayun Kabir’s party. He said that his party will contest the elections alone in Bengal. The party has given this information through a post on social media. Owaisi has taken this decision after the uproar created after an alleged video of Humayun Kabir went viral on social media.

AIMIM posted on social media platform X and wrote, ‘Humayun Kabir’s revelations have exposed the insecurity of the Muslims of Bengal. AIMIM cannot support any such statement which raises questions on the dignity of Muslims. From today AIMIM has withdrawn its alliance with Kabir’s party. Muslims of Bengal are one of the poorest, neglected and exploited communities. Despite decades of secular rule, nothing has been done for them. The party’s policy regarding contesting elections in any state is that the marginalized communities should get an independent political voice. We will contest the Bengal elections independently and will not forge an alliance with any party in future.

Uproar over Humayun Kabir’s viral video

A political controversy broke out in West Bengal on Thursday (April 9) after an alleged video of Humayun Kabir surfaced on social media. In the video, he is seen allegedly claiming to have links with senior BJP leaders and making efforts to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the assembly elections. Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared this in the press conference and demanded an ED investigation into the claims of Kabir’s alleged closeness with Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Subhendu Adhikari, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the PMO.

In the video, Kabir is reportedly heard saying that he is ready to go to ‘any extent’ to remove Banerjee from power and that he is in touch with senior BJP leaders including Suvendu Adhikari. Kabir, who founded ‘Aam Janata Unnayan Party’ days after being suspended from Trinamool late last year, is also said to have approached the PMO and was advised to coordinate with leaders of other BJP-ruled states.

Kabir is also reportedly seen in the video saying that his strategy is centered around wresting minority votes from the ruling Trinamool Congress, indicating that such a change could benefit the BJP electorally. He reportedly mentioned the need for crores of rupees to implement this strategy in all constituencies.
