This fast is the best among all Ekadashis According to Hinduism and Skanda Purana, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered to be the most noble, sacred and difficult among all the 24 Ekadashis that occur in a year. In this Ekadashi, falling in the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, not a single drop of water is consumed from sunrise till sunrise of the next day on Dwadashi, hence it is called ‘Nirjala’.
It is a religious belief that a person who observes this fast with complete devotion and without water in this month of scorching heat, gets the virtuous results equal to all the Ekadashis of the year from this one fast alone. On this day, by worshiping Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, and Mother Lakshmi as per the rituals, all the problems of life go away.
Mythology and History of ‘Bhimseni Ekadashi’ According to mythological beliefs, during the Mahabharata period, Pandava son Bhimsen used to feel very hungry, due to which it was impossible for him to observe the Ekadashi fasts every month. But they also wanted to be free from sin and attain salvation after death.
When he told his pain to Maharishi Ved Vyas ji, Maharishi suggested him to observe a single fast on Nirjala Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha. Following the orders of Maharishi, Bhima observed this difficult and waterless fast with full devotion and due to its virtuous effect, he became free from his sins and finally attained salvation. For this reason, this fast is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi, Pandav Ekadashi or Bhim Ekadashi.
Method of worship of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi On the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, one should wake up early in the morning, take bath, etc. and resolve to fast. After this, light a lamp in the home temple and anoint Lord Vishnu with Ganga water and offer him yellow flowers and yellow clothes. Offer Satvik things to God and include Tulsi leaves (Tulsi Dal) in it, because without Tulsi, Shri Hari does not accept the offering.
On this day, along with Lord Vishnu, also perform aarti of Goddess Lakshmi. One should remember God, meditate and chant mantras throughout the day and night. After this, on the next day i.e. on Dwadashi Tithi, after sunrise in the morning, one should break the fast by performing puja again and only after donating or providing food to the poor and Brahmins, take the prasad.
Importance of Tulsi worship and things to keep in mind According to horoscope analyst Dr. Anish Vyas, worshiping Tulsi on Nirjala Ekadashi has special significance because Tulsi Mata is considered to be the symbol of Goddess Lakshmi and beloved of Vishnu. On this day, to please Lord Vishnu, one should anoint him by mixing saffron in milk, recite Vishnu Sahasranama or Geeta and use yellow items in offering.
