What is the whole matter?
In fact, the Karnataka government has seized about 46 lakh liters of used cooking oil in the last two years. This campaign is being run to protect people’s health and protect the environment. The government has also increased surveillance on hotels, restaurants, bakeries and many other eating places. Teams of officials are conducting regular checks to ensure that repeatedly used cooking oil is not reused.

Four agencies worked together
Between 2024 and 2026, about 45.9 lakh liters of used cooking oil was collected in Karnataka. This work was done by four agencies approved by FSSAI. These agencies purchase used oil from hotels, restaurants and other food businesses and send it to authorized companies under the RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) scheme, where biodiesel is made from it.

What did the officer say?
On this matter, food safety officials said that many small hotels and food shops give their used oil to big hotels, businessmen or aggregators. After this, this oil is transported to FSSAI recognized agencies, so that it can be destroyed safely and is not used in food again.

This oil is a bastion of diseases
Let us tell you that by heating the same oil multiple times and using it, trans fat and other harmful elements increase in it. This can increase the risk of heart disease, cancer and other serious health problems. In such a situation, the Food Safety Department has now instructed hotels and food businessmen to give the used oil only to authorized RUCO agencies and strictly follow the food safety rules.
