The Indian Embassy in Tehran said that on Friday (July 24), a Mozambican-flagged LPG tanker was attacked in the maritime border of Iran, in which 28 Indian crew members were aboard. In a statement issued on Twitter, the embassy said that all the Indian crew members are safe and the embassy is in touch with the authorities.
Forward Siemens Union of India, the trade union representing Indian maritime workers, posted on Twitter that the ship named Disha was attacked by an unidentified missile near the Strait of Hormuz while en route to the Persian Gulf.
Continuous disruption in shipping
Before the conflict broke out in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman, about one-fifth of the world’s energy supply was sent through this route. Tensions have risen since the collapse of a weak ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran in early July, leading to renewed attacks between the two sides and further disruption of shipping through the waterway.
‘All Indian crew members are completely safe’
According to the Indian Embassy in Tehran, as soon as information about the attack on LPG tanker Disha was received on Friday, immediate steps were taken at the diplomatic level. A statement issued by the embassy said, “A total of 28 Indian crew members are present on board the vessel. The Embassy is in direct contact with the relevant Iranian authorities. It is confirmed that all Indian crew members on board the vessel are completely safe.”
The embassy clarified that it is continuously monitoring the situation and is monitoring the necessary security arrangements in collaboration with the Iranian administration. The statement did not provide detailed information about the damage caused to the ship or the exact cause of the incident.
In fact, these continuous incidents happening on commercial shipping routes have raised serious questions regarding the safety of Indian sailors. In recent months, there has been an increase in incidents of targeting of merchant ships in many maritime areas, due to which the security mechanism in international waters has been put on high alert.
