At the age of 63, grandmother fulfilled her 45 year old dream, passed 10th exam with 79.6% marks.

Success Story: You must have heard many times that there is no age limit for education. This very thing has been proved by a 63 year old grandmother from Haryana. Sushila Devi, resident of Mahendragarh district of Haryana and originally from Rewari district, has secured first division in the tenth examination of National Institute of Open Schooling by securing 79.6 percent marks. This achievement is not limited to just passing an examination, but is also the fulfillment of his unfulfilled dream which remained unfulfilled due to circumstances about 45 years ago. Now his next target is to pass 12th examination and contest Sarpanch elections in future.

Had left studies after fifth class

Sushila Devi was very promising in studies since childhood. He topped primary school and also won a scholarship. But due to family reasons and social traditions, his studies stopped after the fifth class. The family did not allow him to send him to another city for further studies, due to which his dream of education remained unfulfilled. In 1981, she got married to Babulal, a farmer from Devnagar village of Mahendragarh district. After marriage, he took up the responsibilities of family and children, but his love for studies never ended. She kept reading newspapers regularly and kept herself connected with new information. This habit kept the desire to learn alive within him.

Son encouraged and got admission in NIOS

A new turn came in Sushila Devi’s life when her son Vishnu talked to her about starting studies again. Initially he was worried that studying at the age of 63 would not be easy and what people would think. However, his son boosted his confidence and got him admitted in NIOS. The family also supported him at every step.

Success achieved by studying three to four hours daily

After completing all the household work, Sushila Devi used to study for three to four hours every day. In the beginning, subjects like Mathematics, Science and English seemed difficult. But her husband, son and two daughters helped her fully in her studies. Due to continuous hard work and support from his family, he prepared well for the examination. In NIOS 10th exam result, Sushila Devi got first division by scoring 79.6 percent marks. Talking about subject wise marks, he got 89 marks in English, 88 in Science and Technology, 78 in Mathematics, 76 in Painting and 67 in Hindi. Along with his family, the entire village is feeling proud due to his achievement.

Dream of becoming Sarpanch after 12th

Sushila Devi’s journey is not going to stop after passing 10th. He has now decided to start preparing for the 12th exam. He has also expressed his desire that if he gets the support of the people of the village, he will also contest the Sarpanch elections in future. Passing the 10th class examination is being considered as the first important step in this direction for them.
