Engineering Biology UG course will start for the first time in the country, new vistas of career in biotech will open.

Engineering Biology UG Course: There is going to be a big change in the field of higher education and biotechnology in India. The Central Government has announced to start graduation level courses in Engineering and Biology for the first time in the country. Along with this, the government has also launched a national roadmap to make India a global bio-economy hub by 2035. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh said that the new course will bridge the gap between engineering, biology, medicine and new technology and prepare it according to the needs of the future. The minister said that just as it has taken forward the digital revolution in computer science, similarly engineering biology will become the cornerstone of India’s biotechnology growth in the times to come. He said that the country will have to create its own strong and self-reliant biotechnology ecosystem, so that India can achieve a strong position at the global level in the fields of science, health and industry.

What is engineering biology?

Engineering Biology is a subject which combines engineering, biology, medical science and modern technologies together. Professionals working in the field will develop new technologies and solutions by combining biological systems, medical technology, artificial intelligence, data science and engineering. The government believes that in future the demand for such experts in health services, biotechnology, bio-manufacturing and advanced medical research will increase rapidly.

A new bridge will be built between medical and engineering

Dr. Jitendra Singh said that now medical and engineering are no longer separate fields. There are many technologies in modern health services, where doctors and engineers have to work together. Giving examples, he said that in future, electronics and software engineers will also play an important role along with medical experts in technologies like ultrasound, CT scan and MRI. He said that many leading institutions including ITI have also sent proposals to start interdisciplinary programs in collaboration with medical institutions, which will increase cooperation between engineering and medical education.

India’s bio economy will get a boost

During the program, the government also released the national roadmap named Building India as a Leading Bio-Economy Power House by 2035. The Union Minister said that in 2014, India’s bio economy was about 10 billion dollars, which has now increased to 95 billion dollars. The government’s target is to turn it into a globally leading bioeconomy worth about $300 billion by 2030 and further by 2035. He said that there are currently more than 11,000 biotech startups in the country, which is a sign of the rapidly growing innovation and investment in the sector.
