Not only school fees, from coaching to college… increasing expenditure on education is becoming a financial burden for families.

Rising Education Cost in India: In India, it has long been believed that expenditure on children’s education is the most important investment. Families may cut back on their other needs, but do not want to compromise on children’s education. However, now the situation is such that just paying school fees is no longer enough, many needs like tuition, coaching, transport, uniform, books, digital devices, extra curricular activities and later on college fees have continuously increased the cost of children’s education. In such a situation, experts say that families who do not make financial plans in time may face huge financial pressure in the future.

Big difference between the expenses of government and private schools

According to the Comprehensive Modular Survey on Education 2025 of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the average annual expenditure of a family per student in government schools is around Rs 2,863, whereas in private schools the same expenditure increases to Rs 25,002. According to the report, apart from school fees, families also spend a lot of money on books, stationery, uniforms and transportation. Families living in urban areas are spending more money on education than those in rural areas.

Increasing trend of coaching is increasing expenses

In today’s time, along with school education, personal coaching is also becoming important. According to the survey, more than one in four students are taking separate coaching apart from school. At the higher secondary level, urban families are spending an average of Rs 9,950 annually on the coaching of a student, whereas in rural areas this expenditure is around Rs 4,548. Since most of the students depend on their family for their education, the increasing cost of education is now directly affecting the household budget.

Not just fees, many other expenses also add to the burden

Experts say that the real cost of education is not limited to school fees only. From time to time schools also have to pay extra fees in the name of various activities, development fees, sports and other programs. Apart from this, many families are continuously spending on laptops, tablets, internet, online learning platforms, professional courses, skill development and preparation for competitive examinations for the education of their children. In view of changing technology and new employment opportunities, these expenses are not considered optional but necessary.

Education inflation is different from general inflation.

Experts associated with the education sector say that many parents assume that the cost of education will increase at the rate of normal inflation, whereas the actual situation may be different from this. According to him, apart from tuition fees, expenses like coaching, hostel, transport, digital equipment and professional courses increase rapidly. In such a situation, planning for the future only on the basis of general inflation cannot be considered sufficient. For example, if the current price of a professional course is Rs 20 lakh, then with the increase in the cost of education in the coming years, the same course can become many times more expensive. Therefore, experts recommend making financial plans keeping in mind different possible situations.
