Now there will be less children per teacher, know the biggest points of UDISE+ 2025-26 report

The Union Education Ministry has released the UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) 2025-26 report related to schools across the country. This report presents the largest official picture of the condition of government and private schools in the country. In this, many important aspects like number of students, availability of teachers, basic facilities in schools, digital education, dropouts, student-teacher ratio and participation of girls have been assessed.

According to the report, improvements have been seen in many areas of school education in the last few years. However, there are some areas where more work is still needed.

Increase in teachers in schools, children will get more time

According to the report, the number of teachers in the country is continuously increasing. There were 94.83 lakh teachers in the year 2022-23, which has increased to more than 1.02 crore (1,02,73,020) in 2025-26. This means that the number of teachers has increased by about 8.3 percent in three years. If you understand in simple language, now a teacher will be responsible for fewer children than before, due to which children will be able to get more attention in studies.

Less children per teacher, better education

According to the report, the Pupil Teacher Ratio has also improved. In the initial classes (Foundation) there are now on average 10 children per teacher.

• 12 children at preparatory level
• 17 children at middle level
• 21 children at secondary level

In the National Education Policy (NEP), a maximum of 30 students per teacher has been recommended. Current figures are better than this target.

The number of children dropping out of school decreased

According to the report, the number of children dropping out of school has also decreased. The dropout rate at the preparatory level reduced from 2.3% to 1.8%. At the secondary level it decreased from 8.2% to 7%. However, a slight increase has been recorded at the middle level. This rate increased from 3.5% to 3.6%. This indicates that more children are continuing their studies than before.

Now more children are completing their studies

The report shows that the retention rate of children in school has also improved. At the middle level it increased from 82.8% to 83.7%. The biggest improvement was seen at the secondary level. Here the retention increased from 47.2% to 51.9%. The government says that by increasing the number of secondary level schools, more children have got the opportunity to study further.

Increase in enrollment in secondary classes

Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) at the secondary level has also increased. It has increased from 68.5% to 71.7%. This means that now more children than before are reaching the secondary level and continuing their studies. The number of children moving from one class to another has increased. According to the report, now more children than ever before are reaching the next class without dropping out of school.

• The transition rate from Foundational to Preparatory level increased from 98.6% to 99.2%
• Increase from 92.2% to 93.8% at Preparatory to Middle level
• Increase from 86.6% to 88.3% at Middle to Secondary level

The number of single teachers and vacant schools decreased

• The number of such schools in the country has also reduced, where there is only one teacher.
• The number of Single Teacher Schools decreased from 1,04,125 to 1,00,843.
• The number of schools which do not have a single student (Zero Enrollment Schools), decreased from 7993 to 5663.

Digital facilities increased in schools

• Computers are now available in 69.9% schools, last year this figure was 64.7%.
• 67.4% schools have internet facility, which was 63.5% last year.
• This is expected to promote online studies, smart classes and digital education.

Facilities like electricity, water and toilet also improved

According to the report, basic facilities are now available in most of the schools

• 95% schools have electricity
• Drinking water available in 99.5% schools
• 98.5% schools have toilets for girls
• Toilets for boys in 97.2% schools
• Hand washing facilities available in 96.9% schools
• Library in 90.5% schools

However, the percentage of schools having playgrounds has decreased from 83% to 81.9%, which can be considered a matter of concern.

Facilities increased for disabled students

The number of schools with ramps and handrails has also increased for the convenience of disabled students. Now ramps and handrails are available in 58.2% schools, whereas last year this figure was 54.9%. Participation of women teachers and students increased. According to the report, the number of women teachers in schools is continuously increasing. Now 54.9% teachers are women, whereas last year this figure was 54.2%. At the same time, enrollment of girl students has also increased slightly. 48.4% girl students are now studying in schools, whereas last year this figure was 48.3%.

What does the full report say?

The UDISE+ 2025-26 report shows that the picture of school education in the country has improved in many respects. The number of teachers has increased, the burden of students on one teacher has reduced, the number of school dropouts has reduced and digital and infrastructure facilities have improved. However, more work is still needed in areas such as some facilities like playgrounds and retaining children in school at some levels. Overall the report presents a positive picture of improvement in the education system.
