Why is there no Pre and Mains pattern in NEET? Know why the government fills seats through only one exam

NEET UG 2026 Exam Pattern: The country’s biggest medical entrance exam NEET UG is once again in the news. Actually, NEET UG 2026 exam has been canceled after the paper leak controversy. After this decision of canceling the examination, many questions have started being raised regarding paper leak. Along with canceling the exam, NTA has also decided to conduct the exam again. But in the questions regarding NEET exam, this controversy is also coming up that why there is no system of pre and mains in medical entrance like the engineering entrance exam JEE. In such a situation, let us tell you today why there is no pre and mains pattern in NEET and why the government fills seats through a single exam.

Single medical entrance test for the entire country

NEET i.e. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is currently the only national examination system for admission to medical and dental colleges in the country. After the National Medical Commission Act came into force in 2019, it was made legally mandatory for medical colleges across the country. Earlier there were separate examinations for medical admission. The state had its own CET exam, while institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER conducted separate entrance tests. Later, all these were abolished and a common examination was implemented, so that all the students could be evaluated in the same manner.

Why was Pre and Mains system not adopted in NEET?

According to experts, to make the medical entrance examination simple and uniform, the government chose the single stage exam model. Experts say that if there is a two-stage examination like JEE, then extra pressure will increase on the students and they will have to do many levels of preparation. The government and the examination agency have been arguing that preparing the merit of students across the country through a single examination is considered easier and more transparent. For this reason, NEET has been kept as a national merit based examination.

Supreme Court has also given support

The Supreme Court has also declared NEET necessary many times. The Supreme Court had said that a common entrance test is necessary to maintain transparency in medical education and to prevent arbitrariness in private colleges. The court had also made it clear that admission in medical colleges will be done only on the basis of NEET score. Private and minority institutions have also not been allowed to conduct separate entrance examinations.

Why was the NEET system started?

The government says that earlier due to different examinations, students had to prepare separately for many states and institutions. This increased time, money and mental pressure. After the implementation of a single examination, students have to prepare for only one entrance test. Apart from this, NEET was also implemented to stop cases like donation, seat buying and rigging in medical admission. An attempt was made to make the admission process more transparent by creating a national merit list. However, even after the implementation of NEET, the controversies did not end. In the year 2024, there was a big controversy regarding paper leak and grace marks, the matter reached the Supreme Court. Now in 2026 also the examination had to be canceled after the news of paper leak.
