Sumit Nagal Withdrawal Davis Cup 2024 Controversy: Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal has recently demanded an annual fee of $50,000 (about Rs 45 lakh) from the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to play in the Davis Cup. This demand has created a stir in the tennis world. Nagal said that it is a common practice in professional sports to compensate athletes for their services, whether they are representing their country or not.
There was a difference of opinion in the AITA executive committee on this issue. Some members believed that players should represent the country without any financial demands, while others believed that performance-based bonuses could be a fair solution. Eventually, the committee authorised the Davis Cup captain to negotiate with Nagal.
What does AITA have to say?
AITA finally agreed to Sumit Nagal’s terms. An insider said that the annual demand of Rs 45 lakh, which is about Rs 20 lakh per match, is reasonable considering the level of the tournament. In international tournaments like US Open and French Open, players win a lot of prize money in the first round itself, so Nagal’s demand cannot be considered excessive.
Statement of Sumit Nagal
Sumit Nagal, who withdrew from the Davis Cup match against Sweden due to injury, clarified that the decision was based on medical advice. He said, “It is an honour for me to play, but playing with an injury can be detrimental not only to my health but also to the team’s prospects.”
In his defence, Sumit Nagal said on social media, “I would like to make it clear that it is normal for athletes in professional sports to receive compensation for participating in their events. It is not about any personal gain.”
