16 got diabetes from frozen food, case against 11 companies; How much danger is there in India?

Bryce Martinez Food Company Lawsuit: An 18-year-old youth in America has started a new debate across the world regarding frozen and ultra-processed food by filing a lawsuit against 11 big food companies. The young man alleges that due to consuming such food items since childhood, he developed serious diseases like type-2 diabetes and fatty liver at the age of just 16. After this matter came to light, questions have started being raised on the safety of ultra-processed and frozen food in America. In such a situation, the question is also arising whether the rapidly growing frozen food market in India can also become a cause of such concern in future?

How did the matter come to light?

According to the New York Times report, Bryce Martinez, a resident of Pennsylvania, USA, suddenly felt severe pain near the chest at the age of 16. Initially he thought he might be having an asthma attack, but when the school nurse checked his blood pressure, the situation turned out to be serious. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors told him that he had type-2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. This news was shocking for Bryce. He was certainly overweight since childhood, but apart from this he did not experience any major health problems. He also did not know that type-2 diabetes can occur even at a young age.

gathered information about the disease

After being diagnosed with the disease, he started gathering information related to his disease on the internet. During this time, he got information about ultra-processed food, food marketing targeted at children and salt, sugar, fat and additives used in food items. He says that in his childhood, a large part of his diet consisted of such packaged and ready-to-eat products. Sweet cereals in the morning, pizza, burgers and macaroni in school, while on returning home, packed food prepared in the microwave was part of his daily routine.

Sued against 11 companies

At the age of 18, he filed a lawsuit against 11 big food companies. These include companies like Kraft Heinz, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle USA. They allege that the companies prepared and promoted such products keeping children in mind, the continuous consumption of which seriously affected their health. This is believed to be the first personal injury lawsuit related to ultra-processed food. After this, many other similar cases have also come to light in America, in which it has been alleged that highly processed foods increased the risk of serious diseases at an early age.

What is the situation in India?

Amidst the ongoing debate in America, the frozen food market is growing rapidly in India too. Frozen products, once bought only on special occasions, are now gradually becoming a part of the everyday kitchen. Frozen momos, nuggets, fries, kebabs, burger patties and ready-to-cook snacks are now making space in the freezers of a large number of homes. The biggest reason for this change is considered to be the rapidly changing lifestyle. Due to increasing number of working families, lack of time and easy availability of quick commerce platforms, people are increasingly adopting such options which can be prepared in a few minutes.

India’s frozen food market is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 14.5 percent between 2025 and 2035, according to Market Research Future report by fortuneindia. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries says that due to increased investment in cold-chain and value addition infrastructure, this sector is expanding and the availability of products has also become better than before.

Experts say that frozen food does not always mean unhealthy food. Many frozen products are prepared using safe technology and frozen to maintain freshness for a longer period of time. However, the problem can increase when people start regularly consuming ultra-processed, high-sodium, high-sugar and high-fat ready-to-eat products. Experts associated with the food industry believe that today people are looking for fresh taste along with convenience. This is the reason why such products are becoming more popular, which can be cooked at home and served fresh. The fastest growth is being seen in categories like nuggets, fries and momos.

Frozen Food Health Risks: 16 cases of diabetes caused by frozen food, case against 11 companies; How much danger is there in India?

what to keep in mind

According to health experts, instead of considering frozen food as completely wrong, it should be chosen wisely. The best option is to read the nutritional information written on the packet, pay attention to the amount of salt and sugar and give preference to fresh home-cooked food. If frozen or ultra-processed foods are eaten occasionally and in balanced quantities, the risk remains low, but if they become the main part of the daily diet, then in the long run the risk of diseases like obesity, type-2 diabetes and fatty liver may increase.
