Can Fatigue And Bloating Be Signs Of Autoimmune Disease: Often we ignore the small signals of our body. Fatigue is considered stress, flatulence is considered an eating disorder and joint pain is dismissed as an effect of age or work. But many times these are not separate problems, but point to a bigger cause, an imbalance of the immune system, which can start in the gut.

What are its signs?

Actually, autoimmune diseases do not show signs loudly in the beginning, but gradually. The body does not make noise about these, but gives subtle signals, which are often ignored. In many cases, it starts in the gut, where a large part of the immune system is controlled. The gut is not only a part of digestion, but it is also a major immune center of the body. About 70 percent of immune activity occurs in the lining of the gut. The microbiome present here i.e. a balanced group of bacteria, viruses and fungi helps the immune system to function properly. But when this balance gets disturbed, the body’s immune system itself starts getting confused.

When the lining of the gut becomes weak, commonly known as leaky gut, harmful substances can reach the bloodstream. Due to this, the immune system gets activated again and again and inflammation starts increasing. Over time this condition can cause autoimmune problems.

What are the initial symptoms?

Its initial symptoms seem to be very common, such as constant fatigue, frequent flatulence, mental fogginess, mild but recurring joint pain or skin problems. These signs do not appear serious when seen alone, but if they persist for a long time or appear together, they should not be ignored. Molecular mimicry can also be one of the reasons for disturbances in the immune system. In this, some bacteria look like the body’s own tissue, due to which the immune system gets confused and starts attacking the body’s own parts. This process gradually gives rise to autoimmune diseases.

What do experts say?

Dr Anirudh Maslekar told TOI that autoimmune diseases do not always start where symptoms appear. In many cases, it may start from gut-related immune imbalance. He says that the initial signs are very mild, so people ignore them, due to which the investigation gets delayed. Doctors believe that if symptoms like fatigue, stomach problems and swelling persist together and for a long time, then a doctor should be consulted immediately. If identified in time, these diseases can be controlled in a better way.
