Doctors spend their night shifts in fear, they are required to carry weapons

A survey conducted by IMA (Indian Medical Association) has revealed the shocking fact that doctors across the country, especially women doctors, feel extremely unsafe during night duty. 3,885 doctors from more than 22 states participated in this survey, out of which 85 percent were under 35 years of age. 61 percent of these doctors were trainees or postgraduates. In some MBBS courses, 63 percent were women, which was correct according to the gender ratio.

Serious concern over safety of women
The survey was conducted to understand doctors’ concerns about safety after the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The survey results show that nearly a third of doctors feel unsafe (24.1 percent) or very unsafe (11.4 percent). Women were particularly vulnerable. Doctors in the 20-30s, who are mostly trainees and postgraduates, felt the most lack of safety. The situation is so bad that some doctors even feel the need to carry weapons for their safety.

Lack of duty rooms and poor condition
The survey also revealed that 45 percent of doctors do not have a duty room. Those who have one, it is crowded, lacks privacy and has security issues. Some duty rooms do not even have a bathroom, forcing doctors to go out at night, which poses a threat to their safety.

Doctors’ safety tips
Doctors have given some suggestions regarding their safety, such as deploying more trained security guards in hospitals, installing CCTV cameras, arranging better lighting and providing safe duty rooms.

Negligence of administration
The survey also revealed that the administration is not taking the safety concerns of doctors seriously. Many times the administration says that senior doctors also work in similar conditions, due to which the problems of junior doctors are ignored.

demand for security law
The doctors have demanded that airport-like security arrangements be made in hospitals across the country and a central security law be implemented so that doctors have a safe workplace and can take better care of patients. The IMA said that the results of this survey can lead to major policy changes, and the government is already considering these issues after the Kolkata incident.
