A 72-year-old man living in Bindapur, West Delhi has been reported to be suffering from Japanese encephalitis. It is being told that he was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on November 3 after chest pain. The city health department on Thursday registered the first case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in the national capital after 13 years.

The case fatality rate (CFR) of this disease is very high and those who survive. They may suffer from a variety of neurological consequences. This virus last hit Delhi in 2011, in which 14 people were infected.
How does this disease spread?
Japanese encephalitis does not spread directly from one person to another. It is spread through mosquitoes, which usually bite humans after sucking the blood of infected pigs or birds. Especially, this disease is more prevalent in areas where there is waterlogging, paddy fields, or filth. Mosquitoes breed rapidly in these places, due to which the risk of this disease increases.
The symptoms of this disease may be mild in the beginning, but they can become serious in a few days.
High fever: Sudden very high fever.
Headache: Feeling severe pain in the head.
Vomiting: Repeated vomiting or feeling nauseated.
Brain problems: Sometimes due to swelling in the brain, unconsciousness, seizures or difficulty in speaking and understanding may occur.
These symptoms may seem minor in the beginning, but as the disease progresses, they can become serious and may threaten the patient’s life.
Prevention of Japanese Encephalitis
Protection from mosquitoes: Use mosquito nets and use mosquito repellent cream or spray.
Maintain cleanliness: Do not allow water to accumulate around the house, so that mosquitoes cannot breed.
