A recent study published in the medical journal The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health has found that women who experience menopause before the age of 40 may have a significantly increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart-related diseases.

This study is based on data of more than 1.11 lakh women from 26 countries. Researchers found that women who experienced menopause between the ages of 40 and 44 had a 30 to 40 percent higher risk of heart disease compared to women who experienced menopause at a normal age.

The figures related to India are even more shocking. Of the 7,872 Indian women included in the study, 1,445 women, or 18.4 percent, had experienced premature menopause. Whereas in 25.3 percent women, menopause occurred between the age of 40 to 44 years. Overall, either premature or early menopause was seen in 43.6 percent of Indian women.

The risk of which problems increases?

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Simone Marshner, who is associated with the Westmead Applied Research Center at the University of Sydney, Australia, says that early menopause can increase the risk of serious diseases like heart attack and stroke in women in the future. But after menopause, this protection gradually reduces and the risk of heart attack can reach the same level as in men.

This situation is worse in South Asia

Research also revealed that menopause occurs at a relatively younger age in women from South Asia and low and middle income countries. While the average age of menopause globally was 47.4 years, in South Asia it was recorded only at 44.7 years.

Menopause screening should also be combined with screening for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases, so that women at risk can be identified in time.
