What Is Text Neck Syndrome Symptoms: Till a few years ago, visiting a neurologist was considered to be associated with serious diseases like stroke, Parkinson’s, epilepsy or dementia. Most of such patients were elderly and complaints like weak memory or difficulty in walking were common. But now this picture is changing rapidly. Nowadays, a large number of youth and teenagers are reaching neurologists with such symptoms, which are being linked to the habit of using smartphones for a long time. Problems like frequent headaches, lack of concentration, poor sleep, dizziness, feeling foggy in the mind and forgetting small things are increasing rapidly.
Changed the way of working, studying and connecting with people
According to Dr. Deep Das, Neurologist, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI, mobile phones have changed the way of working, studying and connecting with people, but its excessive and uncontrolled use can affect the ability to concentrate, sleep, mood and brain function. Constant receiving of notifications, scrolling social media without stopping and switching from one app to another keeps the brain active all the time. Gradually the brain gets used to the constant new stimulation and then it becomes difficult to concentrate on any one task for a long time. This is the reason why many youth now start looking at their phones again and again while reading a book, sitting in a meeting or studying.

Will these things be affected?
According to doctors, the effect of smartphones not only affects attention but is also visible on sleep and memory. Using the phone late at night exposes the eyes to blue light, which reduces the production of melatonin hormone. This hormone controls the sleep and wakefulness cycle of the body. When sleep is not complete, concentration and memory are affected. Along with this, problems of anxiety, depression and long lasting headache may also increase.
What are its symptoms?
Looking at the mobile with the neck bent for a long time also puts pressure on the muscles of the neck and shoulders. This can increase the problem of tension headache and migraine. This situation is called ‘text neck’. Apart from this, continuous viewing of screens also causes digital fatigue, due to which a person can feel mentally tired, irritable and disinterested in work. Many people start having trouble understanding and remembering new information after using screens for a long time.
Doctors say that its effect can be greater on children and teenagers, because their brains are not yet fully developed. Excessive screen time can affect their studies, sleep, physical activities and social behavior.
What are the ways to prevent this?
Experts also clarify that the problem is not the smartphone, but its misuse. They recommend adopting the 20-20-20 rule. That means, every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Apart from this, take regular breaks from the screen, stop using the phone at least an hour before sleeping, sit properly, do regular exercise and spend some time in the open air every day.
