When blood sugar levels remain high for a long time, these nerves start becoming weak. These may become swollen, leak or even close. In some cases, the body forms new blood vessels, but these are extremely fragile and can cause more damage.

What is the problem with this?

This condition is called diabetic retinopathy. It can gradually become serious without any initial symptoms and is one of the major causes of vision loss worldwide. Apart from this, diabetes can also cause other eye related problems. Eye problems caused by diabetes include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma. According to Dr. Nusrat Bukhari, “The risk of these problems is very high in people with uncontrolled diabetes.” The special thing is that the initial signs of these diseases are often not visible.

If the problem of high blood pressure and cholesterol is added to high blood sugar, the situation becomes worse. Smoking also reduces the supply of oxygen, which causes further damage to the eyes. For this reason, its effects may vary from person to person.

However, it is a matter of relief that with proper care this damage can be prevented or reduced. It is very important to control blood sugar, get regular checkups done, eat a balanced and fiber-rich diet, do daily physical activity and reduce stress.
