A severe storm has hit Mecca in Saudi Arabia, one of the holiest places in Islam, causing a lot of trouble to those who went there to perform Umrah. A video surfaced on the internet shows lightning striking the famous clock tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In the viral video, lightning was seen striking the world’s largest clock tower, which lit up the entire city. Photographers captured the moments of lightning striking the clock tower near the Grand Mosque as well as the Abraj Al-Bait complex.

Winds gusting to 80 km/h

Hussein al-Qahtani, spokesman for the National Center for Meteorology, told AFP the storm brought gale-force winds of more than 80 kilometres (50 miles) per hour. Qahtani said conditions were similar to those of a 2015 storm that toppled a crane at the Grand Mosque, killing more than 100 people and injuring hundreds more.

Lightning strikes Saudi’s biggest hotel

The summer storm in Mecca, the holy city of Muslims, has caused problems for people performing Umrah. Photographers also captured several incidents of lightning striking the Grand Mosque and the clock tower of the nearby Abraj Al-Bait complex, which is the tallest building in Saudi Arabia. This beautiful sight of lightning is attracting people’s attention.

People were shocked and troubled

Mecca resident Abu Mayyada told AFP he had gone out to buy cigarettes and petrol when “everything went black” as a dangerous storm hit. “Suddenly I lost control of the car. I couldn’t see anything, so I started listening to the Quran on the radio. I didn’t understand what was happening,” Mayyada said.

The Meteorological Center said on Twitter X that 45 millimetres (1.8 inches) of rain was recorded in Mecca’s al-Kakkiyah area in 24 hours. In footage shared by Mecca residents with AFP, pilgrims outside the Grand Mosque can be seen being struck by wind, causing many in the crowd to collapse on the rain-soaked floor.
