It is believed that once Lord Jagannath’s sister Subhadra expressed her desire to see the city, then he along with brother Balabhadra took her on a chariot to show her the city. During this, Lord Jagannath also reached his maternal aunt’s house in Gundicha and stayed there for seven days.

Why is the journey stopped at the tomb
According to legend, during Jahangir’s time a Subedar had married a Brahmin widow and had a son named Salbeg. Because of the mother being a Hindu, Salbeg had faith in Lord Jagannath cult from the beginning. Salbeg had great devotion towards Lord Jagannath, but he could not enter the temple.

It is told in this legend that Salbeg stayed in Vrindavan for a long time and fell ill when he came to Odisha to participate in the Rath Yatra. After this, Salbeg remembered God with all his heart and expressed his desire to have darshan once. Lord Jagannath became happy on this and his chariot itself stopped in front of Salbeg’s hut. There God allowed Salbeg to worship. Lord Jagannath’s chariot moved forward only after paying respect to Salbeg. And even today this tradition is going on in the memory of Salbeg.
