India Canada Diplomatic Row: The diplomatic dispute between India and Canada is increasing over the issue of the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In this sequence, the crisis deepened on Tuesday (October 15) when the Canadian government hinted at possible sanctions against India. Amid increasing tension between the two countries, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie did not rule out the possibility of imposing sanctions against India and said that all options are under consideration.
Earlier on Monday (October 14), India expelled 6 Canadian diplomats. Apart from this, Canada’s allegations of linking the name of Indian diplomat in the murder of extremist Nijjar were rejected. India later also announced the recall of its High Commissioner from there.
Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie then reacted and said that this is indeed an important step taken. Expelling diplomats is one of the most drastic steps a country can take under the Vienna Convention.
Canada’s statement against India in Nijjar murder case
The way Canada has made absurd statements against India in the Nijjar massacre is really having a deep impact on the relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, Canada has also talked about banning India. However, if this happens then India has many such options, through which Canada can get the answer of brick with stone.
India can respond to Canada in many ways
In view of the recent strained relations between India and Canada, India has several possible options, which could impact the Canadian economy and Khalistan supporters.
- Currently 1.25 lakh Indian students are studying in Canada. If India stops its students from studying in Canada, it will have a big impact on the Canadian economy. Canada receives billions of rupees in fees from Indian students, which is a major economic pillar of their education system.
- India can cancel the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card of those Indian-origin citizens who are sympathetic to Khalistan supporters. This step can have a direct impact on people of Indian origin living in Canada.
- India can abolish the property rights of Khalistan supporters. Also, it can delay the visa process or initiate an investigation against them.
- India may stop multiple-entry visas, which will affect suspected Khalistan supporters living in Canada. This can have a direct impact on the Canadian-Indian community.
- If Canada considers imposing trade sanctions on India, India can also take similar steps. Its loss will be greater to Canada, because Canada’s economy is largely dependent on trade with India.
