MEA On Canada Reaction: Canada has banned Australia Today. This ban was imposed a few hours after the telecast of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s press conference held in Australia. In this press conference, Jaishankar had commented on the India-Canada diplomatic deadlock and Khalistani extremism in Canada. India has also slammed Canada on the issue.
India reacted strongly on Thursday (07 November) saying that it was surprised by Canada’s move to ban this channel. At the same time, he stressed that this exposes Ottawa’s hypocrisy towards freedom of expression. Australia Today is an important outlet for the Indian community. It had telecast the joint press conference of Jaishankar and his Australian counterpart Penny Wong in Canberra.
What did Randhir Jaiswal say?
“We have learned that the social media handles, pages of this particular outlet have been blocked and are not available to viewers in Canada. This incident is related to this particular outlet,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the weekly media briefing in Delhi. “This happened an hour or a few hours after the handle aired the press conference. We find this strange.”
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson told what S. Jaishankar?
He said, “But I would still say that these are actions that once again expose Canada’s hypocrisy towards freedom of expression. You may have seen that the Foreign Minister said three things in his conversation with the media. First of all, “That Canada made allegations and a pattern developed without any solid evidence. The second thing he highlighted was the surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada, which he called unacceptable.”
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson further said, “The third thing he highlighted was the political space given to anti-India elements in Canada. So you can draw a conclusion from this as to why Australia Today channel was blocked by Canada.”
The incident comes days after Khalistan supporters attacked devotees at a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, which Jaishankar described as “extremely worrying”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attack and said that “cowardly attempts” were made to “intimidate” Indian diplomats.
