CJI DY Chandrachud: The country’s Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Saturday (October 26) said that the meetings between the heads of state and central governments and the Chief Justice of the High Court and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court do not mean that any deal has been struck. . Addressing a lecture series at Mumbai University, CJI Chandrachud said, “We meet, but it does not mean that any agreement has been reached. We will have to negotiate with the Chief Minister (CM) of the state because he has to deal with the judiciary. Budget has to be provided and this budget is not for the judges. If we do not meet and depend only on letters then our work will not be done.”

According to legal news portal Live Law, the CJI said, “Believe me, when we meet, there is a lot of maturity in the political system and in my experience in those meetings, no CM ever talks about the pending case.”

‘There is no impact on judicial work’

Emphasizing that the judiciary should be completely independent, he said that there is a difference between the functions of the judiciary and the government on the administrative side. It is a tradition that the Chief Minister or the Chief Justice meet each other on the occasion of festivals or bereavements, but certainly we should have the maturity to understand that this has no bearing on our judicial functions.
