How many temples are there in Indonesia, the Muslim country which PM Modi visited?

Hindu Temples in Indonesia: PM Narendra Modi Currently on tour in Indonesia. During his visit to Indonesia, many important agreements were signed between the two countries regarding defense trade and strategic cooperation. 20 agreements were signed between India and Indonesia in Jakarta, the most important of which was the BrahMos deal. Talks were going on between the two countries regarding this for a long time.

With PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia, Indonesia’s centuries-old cultural relations have once again come into the limelight. Apart from this, India will also cooperate in the conservation and restoration of the ancient Shiva temple of Indonesia. After this, questions also started arising that Indonesia is among the largest Muslim majority countries in the world, but how are there so many Hindu temples there and the Hindu culture is still alive there in some form.

Indonesia is a Muslim majority country, but thousands of temples are present here.

Indonesia is among the countries with the largest Muslim population in the world. About 87 percent of the population here is Muslim, while a large number of followers of Hindu, Buddhist and other religions also live in this country. Known for its religious diversity, this country has more than 10,000 temples, which are part of its rich cultural and historical heritage. These temples include religious places associated with Hindu, Buddhist and local traditions. Especially the island of Bali is still considered a major center of Hindu culture and traditions, where a large number of ancient temples are located.

Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple in the world

Prambanan Temple, located near Yogyakarta on the Java island of Indonesia, is considered to be the largest Hindu temple in the country. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, it was built in the 9th century. The main Shiva temple, about 47 meters high, is the most important attraction of this entire complex. Prambanan is not just a Shiva temple, but it is a temple dedicated to the trinity of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. There are about 250 temples built in the entire complex. The stories of Ramayana have been beautifully carved on stones on the walls of the temples, which are considered to be excellent examples of the art and architecture of that time.

How did Hindu culture reach Indonesia from India?

According to historians, Hinduism reached Indonesia not through any military campaign, but through sea trade. Around the first century, traders from South India started reaching Indonesia to trade in spices, clothes and other goods. Along with them, Indian culture, language, religious traditions and the art of temple construction also reached there. Gradually the local rulers adopted Indian culture, after which Brahmins were invited from India, who spread religious traditions and worship methods. During this period, the worship of Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma became popular there.
