One Nation One Election: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday (18 September 2024) approved the proposal of the committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind on One Nation One Election. The bill will be passed by the Parliament in the winter session, after which it will become a law and with this the doors for conducting simultaneous elections in the country will also open. Elections will have to be held first in 22 states

The implementation of One Nation One Election will not have any effect on Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim, because Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held together here. Apart from this, there are 22 states where elections will have to be held before time. After the implementation of One Nation One Election, elections will have to be held before time in Assam, Bihar, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Puducherry, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal.

Elections will be delayed in five states

If One Country One Election is implemented, then elections will be delayed in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, while informing about the approval of the Union Cabinet to the proposal, said that an implementation group will be formed to take forward the recommendations of the committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind and detailed discussions will be held at various forums across the country in the next few months. He said that the government will implement it in its current tenure.

Simultaneous elections were held in the country between 1951 and 1967, but after that, due to various reasons including mid-term elections, elections started being held at different times. This year, elections will be held in May-June. Lok Sabha Elections While in states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, assembly elections were held along with the parliamentary elections.
