Is the Chinese app BAT-BMS, which stops e-rickshaws, a dangerous game? The government removed two, what is the punishment for the act?

For the last few days, such videos have been circulating on social media in which a person uses his mobile to stop an e-rickshaw moving on the middle of the road. The driver stands there confused and unable to understand what happened. There is a Chinese app behind these videos, named BAT-BMS. Now the government has come into action in this whole matter.

It has been told by the government that two apps related to remote stopping of e-rickshaw have been removed. The government has also made it clear that this issue will be raised with the companies running the app stores. The aim is to ensure that such harmful apps do not come to the store in the future, that is, the government is preparing not only to remove the app but also to close the way in future.

Connection of Chinese app and Chinese battery

BAT-BMS app was created by Chinese company Shenzhen Greenergy Technology to view information like battery charging, temperature and voltage, but the BMS of Chinese lithium batteries installed in many cheap e-rickshaws sold in India does not have password or security. In such a situation, the Bluetooth of the battery can connect to any phone at a distance of 10 to 15 meters. The battery shutdown feature in the app, which was designed to be used during repairs, is now misused by some people to disconnect the power of the e-rickshaw.

Every e-rickshaw is not at risk

This fear does not apply to every e-rickshaw. The old e-rickshaws which run on lead-acid batteries do not have Bluetooth. Therefore they are completely safe. Apart from this, many companies use different software in their lithium batteries, on which this app does not work. The danger lies only with those cheap batteries in which no safety settings have been made. Some experts are also saying that connecting to a moving vehicle and finding the right device in the crowd is not as easy as it appears in the video, but this does not completely eliminate the danger.

claims and law

Some people claim that this app can immediately stop any e-rickshaw through Bluetooth, but investigation revealed that the app needs a separate ID to connect to the battery. That means without that special ID it cannot automatically connect to every vehicle. There are different opinions on this claim, so it cannot be considered completely certain. According to cyber law expert Pawan Duggal, connecting the battery of someone’s e-rickshaw without permission can be a crime under sections 43 and 66 of the IT Act. According to him, e-rickshaw is also a kind of computer system and interfering in it without permission can lead to punishment and fine. The government also has the right to block such apps under Section 69A of the IT Act.

what next

Many experts are also saying that the real solution is that the battery manufacturing companies should sell the vehicles only after installing password and security in advance so that no one gets a chance to tamper with it later. At present, the government is keeping an eye on this entire matter. Two apps have been removed and now preparations are on for talks with app store companies. In the coming days, it remains to be seen what concrete steps the government takes against battery manufacturing companies and app stores.
