America’s Joe Biden government has said that Pakistan has made significant progress in curbing terror funding and regional extremist networks. It has taken action not only in its own country but also against its citizens involved in terrorist activities in other countries. The US State Department has released this report this week. The Biden government has been adopting a tough stance against Pakistan for terrorism for a long time, but now its stance seems to have changed. However, the report also said that there has been an increase in terrorist attacks since 2023, which has also increased the security threat.

According to the report published in Pakistani newspaper The Dawn, the US State Department has said that work has been done by Pakistan to stop money laundering and funding for terrorism. Pakistan has also been praised for completing the National Risk Assessment (NRA). Under the NRA, 87 terrorist organizations were assessed and the main sources of terror funding such as donations and extortion were also identified.

According to estimates, there are 41 groups active in Pakistan, which take advantage of cash courier and illegal money transfer services. The report says that financial support is coming from the borders with Afghanistan. The report said that in line with its commitment to UN resolutions, Pakistan also prosecutes its citizens who participated in wars in other countries upon their return.

The report said there were about 100 Pakistani nationals in northeastern Syria in 2023, and Pakistan in December extradited an American-Pakistani national to the US to face trial for terrorism-related crimes. The American report also says that Pakistan keeps biometric information of those crossing the border through its International Border Management Security System.

The report highlighted Pakistan’s removal from the gray list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in October 2022 as an important achievement in Washington. It said that security analysts believe that Pakistan has made progress in combating terrorist financing, but its domestic security situation still remains dangerous.
