‘Libya-like situation in Manipur’, Retired General’s spilled pain, Ex Army Chief appeals to PM

Manipur Violence: Violence in Manipur is not taking the name of stopping even after about one and a half months. Ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki tribes in Manipur continues despite appeals for peace by the central and state governments. Meanwhile, former Army Chief General (Retd) Ved Prakash Malik has appealed for immediate attention to the situation in Manipur.

The former army chief has drawn the attention of the government to the tweet of an ex-army officer living in Manipur. Describing the situation in Manipur as worrying, he wrote to the Prime Minister of the country. Narendra Modihas called upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to look into the matter at the highest level.

Retired officer compared with Syria

Lt Gen (Retd) Nishikant Singh had tweeted about the situation in Manipur, in which he said, “I am an ordinary citizen of Manipur, living my life after retirement. The state is now stateless. Anyone can finish at any time, as is happening in Libya, Lebanon, Nigeria, Syria. Manipur seems to have been left to its own devices. Is anyone listening?”

Retweeting Nishikant Singh’s tweet, the former Army Chief wrote, “An exceptionally sad call from a retired Lieutenant General from Manipur. The law and order situation in Manipur requires immediate attention at the highest level.

Violence started on 3 May

Violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 following a rally by the Kuki tribal community. This rally was called in protest against the grant of tribal status to the majority Meitei community of the state. So far, more than 100 people have died due to violence in the state, while more than 300 people have been injured. The houses of more than 10 thousand people have been burnt. A huge amount of properties have been damaged in the state.
