Pakistani detained in India’s detention center went on hunger strike to ‘return home’, said- ‘Punished’

Pakistan National in Bengaluru Jail: A man from Pakistan is now waiting to go home after spending 17 years in Bengaluru jail. Pakistani citizen Mohammad Fahadh was acquitted in all the cases including a terrorism case but despite this he is lost in the memories of his family members sitting in the jail cell. In the same month, Mohammad Fahad also went on a hunger strike for about 5 days, but due to his deteriorating health, the authorities forcibly fed him food.

Fahad has been acquitted in all cases including a terrorist case. “We convinced him to eat food because he had fallen ill and his health had deteriorated,” newspaper The Hindu quoted a detention center official as saying.

Where is the blockage?

The newspaper quoted Fahadh’s lawyer as saying that he lives alone in his cell. He is prohibited from going anywhere except the toilet. His mother is almost at the last stage of her life and is waiting for her son.

Fahad’s lawyer said, “Fahad wrote letters to the FRRO and the Pakistan High Commission explaining his plight and how necessary it was for him to travel to Pakistan to be with his ailing mother.”

A source in Delhi-based Pakistan High Commission told the newspaper that Pakistani officials are in regular touch with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Fahadh’s citizenship was approved back in 2011 and the commission is waiting for the Ministry of External Affairs to fix the date of deportation. On the other hand, an FRRO official said, “We have to follow a process and as soon as the process is over, he can be deported.”

What is Fahadh’s story?

Mohammad Fahadh’s father was Indian, but he moved to Pakistan in 1970. His father had married a local woman and settled there. In 2006, Fahadh came to India to reunite with his relatives in Kasargod, Kerala. During this time, he decided to stay back after reportedly falling in love with a woman.

Fahadh was arrested in Mysore in 2007 for attempting to forge documents to establish his Indian identity. He was convicted and spent eight years in Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. In 2012, he was charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Arms Act for alleged involvement in a terrorist conspiracy.

He was an accused in the 2005 IISc attack case. In this case, a rowdy sheeter named Syed Abdul Rehman was accused of radicalization. Officers Pasha and Rehman were convicted in this case, while Fahad was acquitted of all charges.
