Politics in Haryana revolves around three ‘Laal’, relatives are pitted against each other

Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: In the assembly elections to be held in Haryana on October 5, many relatives of the three famous ‘Lal’ of the state have also entered the fray and the electoral contest has become interesting as some of them are pitted against each other. Since Haryana was formed as a separate state in 1966, its politics has revolved around the three famous ‘Lal’.

These include Devi Lal, popularly known as ‘Tau’ Devi Lal, Bhajan Lal and Bansilal. All of them have been chief ministers of the state. Devi Lal was also the country’s deputy prime minister. For the elections to be held next month, several members of these prominent political families have been fielded as candidates by the Congress, BJP, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP).

‘Lalon ke Lal’ entered the electoral fray in Haryana

Voting for the 90-member assembly of the state is to be held on October 5 and counting of votes will take place on October 8. In the Tosham assembly seat in Bhiwani district, there is going to be a contest between two grandsons of the late Bansi Lal. Former treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Anirudh Chaudhary is the grandson of Bansi Lal and he is contesting against his cousin and former MP Shruti Chaudhary, who is the BJP candidate.

Shruti is the daughter of BJP leader Kiran Chaudhary and Bansi Lal’s late son Surendra Singh. Anirudh Ranbir Singh is Mahendra’s son. Mahendra, a former BCCI president, and Surendra were brothers. Tosham assembly constituency was represented by Kiran Chaudhary but she resigned as MLA last month, after which BJP made her a candidate from Haryana for the Rajya Sabha elections and she won unopposed.

Interesting contest on Dabwali seat too

Not just Tosham, an interesting contest can be seen in Dabwali seat in Sirsa district as well. This seat is currently held by the Congress. From Dabwali, Devi Lal’s grandson Aditya Devi Lal is the INLD candidate. He is pitted against JJP’s Digvijay Singh Chautala, who is the great grandson of the former Deputy Prime Minister (Devi Lal).

Aditya Devi Lal is the son of Chaudhary Devi Lal’s youngest son Jagdish. Aditya left the BJP and joined the INLD on Sunday and was made the candidate from Dabwali. Before joining the INLD, which is fighting the Haryana elections in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Aditya visited his uncle and former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala’s residence in Sirsa and took his blessings.

Digvijay Singh Chautala is the brother of JJP leader and former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala. JJP is contesting the elections in alliance with Chandrashekhar Azad-led Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram). JJP is led by Dushyant and Digvijay’s father and former MP Ajay Singh Chautala.

Who is fighting the election battle on Adampur and Raniya seats?

From Adampur seat in Hisar district, BJP has fielded Bhavya Bishnoi, grandson of former Chief Minister (late) Bhajan Lal. Bhavya is currently an MLA from Adampur. His father Kuldeep Bishnoi is a senior BJP leader. An interesting contest can also be seen on Rania seat in Sirsa district because Devi Lal’s son Ranjit Singh Chautala had said that he would contest the election as an independent candidate after not getting a ticket from BJP.

INLD has fielded Devi Lal’s great grandson Arjun Chautala from Rania, which is also in Sirsa district. Arjun’s father is senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala. Talking to the media about JJP, INLD’s Aditya Devi Lal said, “The party used to tell people that this (Sirsa area) is their ‘janmabhoomi’ and ‘karmabhoomi’, but sometimes they go to Uchana (from where Dushyant is contesting), sometimes to Bhiwani (from where Ajay Chautala was an MP), sometimes to Dabwali. But people are wise, they know.”

After joining the INLD, Abhay Chautala urged the people gathered in the village to “give so much support to Aditya that those contesting against him are forced to think before filing their nominations about their fate in the electoral contest.” However, JJP’s Digvijay Chautala is confident that he will win the Dabwali seat by a “huge margin”.

Meanwhile, Arjun Chautala said, “I am sure that the people of Rania will give their blessings and make our party victorious.” About Ranjit Chautala, Arjun said, “He has decided to contest the election as an independent, but I think it is not going to make much difference.”

In this year’s Lok Sabha election, three members of the Devi Lal family – Devi Lal’s son Ranjit Singh Chautala, who is an independent MLA and Lok Sabha Elections JJP MLA Naina Chautala, wife of JJP chief and Devi Lal’s grandson Ajay Singh Chautala, and Sunaina Chautala (47), wife of Ravi Chautala, a cousin of INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala, who joined the BJP shortly before the Hisar parliamentary seat, contested against each other.

However, none of them could win and the Hisar seat was won by the Congress candidate. INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala was also a candidate from the Kurukshetra parliamentary seat but this seat was won by BJP’s Naveen Jindal.
