Odisha Train Accident: The survivors of the Odisha train accident narrated the scene they saw on Saturday (June 3). Several passengers aboard the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, returning to their families after working for several months in South India, suddenly fell from their seats and lost their lights when they heard a loud noise. They were just five hours away from their destination in Howrah when the train they were traveling in met with an accident at Bahanga Bazar station in Odisha’s Balasore district.
The train was running a little over three hours behind schedule on Friday (June 2) and was on its way to its next stop at Balasore, about 20 km away, when the accident took place at around 7 pm. Mizan-ul-Haq, a resident of Bardhaman in West Bengal, was in a compartment at the rear of the train. Haq, who was returning from Karnataka, said, “The train was running at high speed. Around 7 in the evening, a loud noise was heard and everything started shaking. As soon as there was a power failure inside the bogie, I fell on the floor from the top seat. He said that somehow he got out of the damaged coach and reached a safe place.
Haq said from Howrah station that it was very sad that many people were lying near the badly damaged coach. North Howrah Deputy Commissioner of Police Anupam Singh said that 635 passengers in the unaffected 17 coaches of the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express reached Howrah at 1 pm on Saturday (June 3), out of which 40 to 50 people were treated.
How did you save your life?
Singh said five of them were sent to hospital for further treatment, while the others left for their destinations. Rekha, a resident of Bengaluru who was traveling to Kolkata, said she was traveling in the front compartment of the derailed coaches.
He said, “Initially there was complete chaos. We got out of our compartment out of fear and sat in the dark in the nearby fields until our train left for Howrah in the early hours,” said a resident of Bardhaman and a carpenter working in Bengaluru. That the bogie in which he was traveling got hurt on his chest, leg and head when it overturned. He said, “We had to jump out of the compartment by breaking the windows to save ourselves. After the accident, we saw many dead bodies lying.
