Uniform Civil Code Issue: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Bhopal on Tuesday (June 27), the rhetoric started in the opposition and the government continued on Thursday (June 29) as well.

On one hand, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, former Jammu and Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah and former Law Minister Kapil Sibal targeted the central government regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). 1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in Bhopal on Tuesday, “The work of provoking people is being done in the name of UCC. If there is one law for one member of the family in a house and another law for the other, then will that family be able to run? In such a situation, how will the country be able to run with such a dual system? We have to remember that the Constitution of India also talks about equal rights of citizens.

2. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin alleged in Chennai on Thursday that PM Modi was trying to completely disrupt the law and order situation and instigate ‘religious violence’, but people would answer him in the 2024 elections.

3. DMK Chief Stalin said that our PM Modi says that there should not be two types of laws in a country. They are thinking of winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by inciting communal feelings and creating confusion in the country. 4. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said that before discussing about UCC, the central government should implement reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. On the ongoing debate on the UCC issue, he said, “The NCP will clarify its stand after considering the suggestions and demands of various communities.”

5. Former Law Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Kapil Sibal asked PM Modi three questions regarding UCC. He tweeted, “Prime Minister Narendra insisted on the Uniform Civil Code. Accused the opposition of inciting Muslims. First question, why this thing after nine years? 2024 (for election)? Second question, how ‘similar’ is your proposal, tribals and NE all come under it? Third question, every day your party targets Muslims. Why? Now you are worried.

6. National Conference President Farooq Abdullah said in Srinagar on Thursday that the central government should not pursue the issue of UCC and reconsider the consequences of its implementation. Abdullah said, “This is a country full of diversities. People of different castes and religions live here and Muslims have their own Sharia law. He further said that (the central government) should consider all this and instead of taking it forward, think about its consequences. Lest it happen that a storm comes.

7. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) said on Thursday that mere opposition to ‘Sharia’ cannot be the basis of UCC. The party’s mouthpiece Saamana also emphasized that UCC also means equality for all in the eyes of law and justice. Sharia is Islamic religious law based on the teachings of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, which the people of Muslim society follow.

8. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Thursday (June 29) amid the opposition’s attack on the central government, “There is no need to speculate on the UCC as the Law Commission has given one month’s time.” The time given by the commission to give suggestions is till July 13. Therefore, it is not right to say much on this right now.

9. Union Minister and BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia countered the attack of the opposition and said that all the citizens of the country are equal and with everyone’s cooperation it would be possible to implement the same UCC. He said that the people of the country have to decide whether they want to vote for political parties which follow the policy of appeasement or those (BJP) which follow the policy of appeasement.

10. Scindia said that after declaring the practice of triple talaq illegal and abrogating most of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the UCC would now be enacted with everyone’s help. He said that PM Modi has made all these steps possible whereas such steps were not taken in the last 70 years.
