Talking to news agency ANI, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that earlier Tarun Gogoi had said that Jorabat is the main reason for the floods in Guwahati. However, now the Congress and Tarun Gogoi’s son abused me as to why I take the name of Meghalaya University of Science and Technology.

What is the matter?

Amid the recent floods in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has blamed the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) for worsening the situation. CM Sarma alleged that USTM, located on the Assam-Meghalaya border at Baridua in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, is blocking the flow of water from the Meghalaya hills to Guwahati. He claims that the construction of the university has blocked the natural water flow, causing severe flooding in the city.

Sarma criticised USTM for large-scale excavation of hills to build the campus, saying, “The university has taken advantage of its geographical location and dug up a huge hill. More than 4-5 hills of Meghalaya have been cut to build the university.

The university was held responsible for the flood

In this case, CM Sarma alleged that the reason for the flood in the city is the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM). This university is located in the Ri-Bhoi district of the neighboring state. USTM is a private university established in the year 2008. This university was founded by Mehbubul Haque. He is also the Chancellor of the University. Mehbubul Haque is a Muslim of Bengali origin from Karimganj district of Barak Valley in Assam. About 6,000 students are studying in this university.
