UNSC elections at a time when there are many changes in the world
This election of the United Nations Security Council will take place at a time when the world is facing a rapidly changing geopolitical scenario. Events like Ukraine war, Gaza conflict and US-Israel military action against Iran are giving a new direction to global politics.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the Parliament of Indonesia last week, had said that the global system is changing rapidly, at such a time developing countries like India want equal participation and a more effective role in global affairs. He had said that in this changing global scenario, reform of the United Nations Security Council has become necessary.
India has been an advocate of reform in UNSC
India has long been a key supporter of the demand for comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council. He says that the 15-member Security Council formed in 1945 is no longer in accordance with the needs of the 21st century and the current geopolitical realities. Therefore, the number of members in both the permanent and temporary sections of the Council should be increased. India has also been continuously reiterating that it is a legitimate contender for permanent membership of the Security Council.
