Children buying liquor at liquor shops? As soon as he heard the judge held his head and gave this order to the center

The Supreme Court on Monday (November 11, 2024) sought response from the Center on the petition in which it has been requested to direct to make an effective manual and strong policy for mandatory age verification at liquor shops and other selling points.

The petition states that the excise policy of various states has age-related laws, under which it is illegal for a person below a certain age to consume or possess liquor, but at places of sale or consumption of liquor, it is mandatory for consumers or buyers to There is no concrete system to check age.

In the petition, the policy of home delivery of liquor has been opposed and it has been argued that this will rapidly increase the addiction of drinking alcohol among underage people. This petition came up for hearing before the bench of Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai and Justice KV Vishwanathan. In various states and union territories of the country, the minimum legal age for drinking alcohol has been fixed between 18 to 25 years. p style="text-align: justify;">Non-governmental organization (NGO) Community Against Drunken Driving has filed this petition. His lawyer Vipin Nair argued during the hearing that there is no system in liquor shops, bars, pubs etc. to check the age of consumers or buyers. The petition states that a concrete policy in this regard will help in reducing and preventing the problem of drunk driving and will also curb underage drinking.

The petitioner has suggested that a fine of Rs 50,000 or three months’ jail or both should be imposed on a person guilty of selling, serving or providing liquor to minors. The Centre, all the states and union territories have been made respondents in the petition. The bench said that it will issue a notice to the Center on this petition and seek its reply."text-align: justify;">The court said, ‘The notice should be limited to defendant number one (Union of India).’ The next hearing of the case will be after three weeks. In the petition, a request has been made to direct to make a policy for mandatory age verification at all shops, pubs or bars serving liquor and to implement it. The NGO said in its petition that according to data collected from many de-addiction centers in the country, one out of every five patients is between 16 and 19 years of age."text-align: justify;">Also read:-
