Climate change behind heatwave in UP: Know when heat turns into heatwave?

The number of patients getting admitted in the hospital due to heatstroke in UP is continuously increasing. According to a study of the Climate Shift Index, the chances of heat wave in Uttar Pradesh have doubled due to climate change.

Climate Shift Index is an independent American group of scientists. The Climate Shift Index (CSI) is doing research on temperature changes due to climate change.

Recently, 68 patients died in the district hospital of Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh in five days till Monday. However, officials say that only two people have died due to heat stroke. According to media reports, many people died in Deoria district also due to the scorching heat.

Now CSE has started working on climate change connection of scorching heat. Climate Central researchers analyzed how much and by how many times temperatures have risen above historical averages. 

What Climate Central report says on heat wave in UP

Between 14-16 June, there was severe heat in Uttar Pradesh. In these three days, it was twice as hot as compared to every other day. According to the report, climate change was told responsible for this summer. On June 16, the temperature in UP’s Ballia district reached 42.2 degree Celsius.

CSI pointed to the serious consequences of climate change in the report. It was explained like this. 

Level-1 : Level-1 indicates clear climate change signal.  

Level 2 and 5:Level 2 and 5 mean that the warming due to climate change has increased two to five times. 

What the report says about the heatwave in different parts of India 

Except for Uttar Pradesh, most places across India experienced severe heatwave during the same period. During this heat wave affected millions of people in India. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were the most affected. While other states like Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh also recorded high temperatures. 

According to the report of Climate Central, due to the rapid change in the climate, the temperature also increased rapidly during the three days with high humidity. The report expressed concern that the way climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heat waves will emerge as the most dangerous season.  

Despite the worsening weather, a recent World Weather Attribution (WWA) study has revealed that the heat action plan in India is working at a very slow pace. There is a need to work on this all over the world, and more so in India, said Friederike Otto, co-head of WWA, a panel of international experts. 

According to the India Meteorological Department, heat wave conditions prevailed over East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Chhattisgarh for about 10 days, while Odisha, Jharkhand, Telangana and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh for about 12 days. Heat web conditions prevailed. 

Death toll due to heatwave on the rise

Heatwave is very dangerous for human life. Researcher Maryam Zakaria of Imperial College London and WWA said in a report, "Excessive heat and humidity together have a very serious effect on humans. Increasing urbanization and carbon emissions are becoming a threat to life. 

An IMD report in May said that heat waves would increase significantly by 2060 in most parts of India. Strong hot winds will continue for 12 to 18 days.  

The fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said that heat waves caused by climate change have caused the most deaths in South Asian countries. The report states that a moderate increase in average temperature or a slight increase in the duration of heatwaves leads to a large increase in mortality in India. But no concrete steps are being taken. 

In addition to affecting human health and livelihoods, increased temperatures can lead to significant reductions in crop yields, and adversely affect fertility in many crops. 

Heat heat conditions persist in many areas of the country 

Due to the delay in monsoon, prolonged heat wave conditions have prevailed over East and Central India. Had the monsoon arrived at its normal time, the region would have received massive relief.  It is still raining in East and Central India, with humid winds from the Bay of Bengal adding to the woes. 

The fact cannot be denied that the heat is increasing due to global warming. Mahesh Palawat, Vice President, Skymet Weather said in a report that  "Due to these reasons extreme weather conditions prevail. 

Heat waves are one of the deadliest natural hazards. In this every year thousands of people around the world die due to heat.
