Party Symbols: In this election, the Election Commission has issued ‘symbols’ for the candidates of independent and unrecognized parties. These include walking stick (chhadi), baby walker, needle, air conditioner (AC) and bangles. On one hand recognized national and state parties contest assembly and Lok Sabha elections on their symbols, on the other hand candidates of independent and unrecognized parties have to choose their symbols from the list issued from time to time through the election panel. On May 15, the Election Commission has released a new list of 193 ‘free symbols’.
The free symbols issued by the Election Commission include stick, baby walker, air conditioner, balloon, bangles, wheelbarrow, whistle, window, wool, needle, watermelon, nut, wallet, violin, vacuum cleaner and trumpet. Assembly elections are due in the states of Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana later this year. The term of the current assembly in these states will end between December 2023 and January 2024.
The term of the assemblies of these states is ending
The term of the 40-member Mizoram assembly ends on December 17. The terms of the Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh Assemblies are ending on January 3 and January 6, respectively. The terms of the Rajasthan and Telangana Assemblies end on January 14 and January 16, respectively. Simultaneous elections in these five states cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Possibility of elections in Jammu and Kashmir
Apart from the scheduled elections, assembly elections are also likely to be held in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir this year. Sources had earlier said that elections in Jammu and Kashmir could be held in the summer of 2023 and the timing would depend on the security scenario. After the conclusion of the 62-day Amarnath Yatra from July 1 to August 31, a possible window may be available for elections in Jammu and Kashmir in October this year.
The term of the assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Odisha is ending in June next year on different dates. Generally, Lok Sabha elections are held in April-May, so there is a possibility that assembly elections in three states can be held simultaneously with the parliamentary process.
