Wrestlers including Bajrang Punia said – do not show fear of job
Earlier on Monday (June 5) there was news that the wrestlers have returned to their jobs in the Railways. On this, top wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat tweeted on Monday (June 5), saying, “Those who call our medals worth Rs 15-15 are now after our jobs.” Our life is at stake, a job is a very small thing in front of that. If the job is seen to be an obstacle in the way of justice, then we will not take even ten seconds to leave it. Don’t show fear of job.
In another tweet, wrestler Bajrang Punia appealed to the countrymen to stay away from any rumor and said that the fight (movement) will continue till justice is achieved.
Case of demonstration of wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Singh
- On January 18 this year, around 30 wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar, demanding action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh under allegations of sexual harassment. On January 19, the wrestlers had a conversation with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur till late. Then Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Ravi Dahiya met the Sports Minister. The government had assured the wrestlers of action in the matter.
- After this, on April 23, the wrestlers again sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar. On 24 April, the Sports Ministry had said that the Indian Olympic Association would constitute an ad-hoc committee (temporary committee) to conduct the elections to the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation within 45 days.
- On May 13, news came that the Indian Olympic Association has completely barred all the officials of the Wrestling Federation of India from taking any official work and decisions related to the running of this body. After this, the elections of the Wrestling Federation were to be held on May 7, which were canceled by the Sports Ministry.
- Wrestlers are constantly demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing president of the Wrestling Federation of India. Delhi Police has registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan. On May 28, the wrestlers tried to hold a Mahila Mahapanchayat near the new Parliament, due to which the police took them into custody and removed their belongings from Jantar Mantar.
- After this the wrestlers tried to throw their medals in the river Ganga in Haridwar. However, on the call of Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait and other supporters, the farmers did not shed their medals. In support of the wrestlers, the farmers organized a Khap mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar in UP and on June 2 in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
- Meanwhile, on Tuesday (6 June), the Delhi Police also recorded the statements of Brij Bhushan’s colleagues and people working at his residence in UP’s Gonda in view of the sexual harassment allegations against him. At present, the wrestlers have said that their movement will continue till justice is served.
